A familiar picture: vanilla runs perfectly, but the moment you enable your collection — a crash, a black screen, or an endless loading bar. The good news: HOI4 mod problems come from a fairly short list of causes, and almost every one is fixed in minutes. We go through all the typical failures — from startup crashes to multiplayer checksum mismatches — and show how to find the culprit from the logs quickly.
The game crashes on startup
- A mod built for an older game version: after a major patch, total conversions update with a delay — check that the mod page supports 1.19x.
- Two total conversions in one list: Kaiserreich and Old World Blues cannot coexist — keep one.
- A broken manual descriptor: the .mod file points to a folder that does not exist (path=...). Check that the path and folder name match character for character.
- Duplicates: the same mod is subscribed on Steam and also sits as a copy in the mod folder — the game sees two identical mods and crashes.
The game hangs on loading or shows a black screen
First, do not panic: heavy conversions like Millennium Dawn and BlackICE take five to fifteen minutes on their first launch, and that is normal. The game may look frozen — just wait. If there is still silence after twenty minutes, two mods are overwriting the same file and fighting over it: trim the list using the method from our load order guide. A third common cause is a bloated launcher cache after many installs: reinstalling the Paradox Launcher from the game folder takes a minute and clears it.
A mod will not enable or shows an exclamation mark
- Missing dependency: the mod page lists required libraries or submods — without them it will not start.
- A manual mod without a descriptor: HOI4 only sees mods that have a .mod file next to the folder; a bare folder is invisible.
- Version mismatch: the mod was built for a different patch — the launcher marks it red and may refuse to enable it.
- Cyrillic and spaces in paths: folders with non-Latin characters sometimes break loading — rename them in Latin letters.
Multiplayer: checksum mismatch
The server rejects the connection with a checksum mismatch when players have different mod sets, a different mod order, or different game and DLC versions. Compare the mod lists character by character — one disabled submod on the guest side breaks the whole connection. Order matters too: the same collection in a different sequence produces a different checksum. For arrangement details see the load order guide; for installing without Steam, the dedicated guide.
Quick diagnostics with error.log
- 1Open Documents/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron IV/logs/error.log.
- 2Check the last lines: they usually name the specific file or mod that caused the failure.
- 3Disable all mods and launch the game — vanilla must run clean.
- 4Enable mods in batches of five until the error returns — this finds the culprit in 3–4 launches.
- 5Fix the mod you found: update it, remove the duplicate, or delete it entirely.
error.log is your main tool: errors like «Database: unknown province» almost always mean two mods are rewriting the same map or country history.

Prevention over cure
A couple of habits save hours: update mods one at a time instead of all at once, so you always know what broke. Keep a snapshot of a working collection — a screenshot of the launcher list is enough. And never enable an incompatible mod «just to try»: one broken file can crash the whole game no matter how well the other twenty behave.
The collection flies again — great. Our best HOI4 mods roundup suggests what to pick for a new campaign, the load order guide reminds you how to arrange it, and the live catalog with versions waits on the HOI4 page.
